What Makes Old Duck Decoys Collectible

The concept of a decoy for hunting purposes has been around for thousands of years. But the notion of what we today consider to be a decoy did not really appear until the turn of the nineteen century when the need to hunt to earn a living really came to the fore for a large number of people. With that need to support a family perhaps and thus earn a living came what we now consider Old duck decoys.

Many of the first decoys made were very simple in their construction. Many were nothing more than crudely carved hunks of wood with a head like attachment that had been painted in dull colors. The wood needed to be dull because ducks were found to be almost suspicious of anything too brightly colored in the water when they flew over or came into land.

Decoys were extensively produced in the eighteen hundreds and were sent out all across the country. But handcrafted decoys still remained relatively common as it was often cheaper for hunters to make them themselves. To make the ducks simpler to shoot, decoys were placed in open bodies of water to encourage ducks in. Shooting was considered the best method for getting a good number of ducks, but bows and arrows were still used as well. The disadvantage of the bow over the gun was that the shooter needed the ducks to be substantially closer.

Traditionally made from wood, many old decoys were destroyed or sold for next to nothing at the introduction of decoys made from plastic. Being constructed from wood, old decoys were heavy and cumbersome to transport around, especially when large numbers of them were needed.

Interestingly, decoys can be identified by the geographical area from which they originated. This can be done by looking at the way the decoy has been carved and at the species of ducks that they have been carved to represent. When money was limited, hunters were often left with no choice but to carve their own decoys. As a result they frequently looked to the decoys that they already had and used or copied the birds with which they themselves were familiar with.

Old duck decoys that have been well constructed can now be very collectible and extremely valuable. Decoys that have quality workmanship are generally those that are prospectively quite valuable. Being constructed to be hollow bodied makes a decoy collectible as this form of decoy was considered to be more difficult to produce although extremely popular.
