Uncovering The Mysteries Of The Goolgle Crawl – Part One

October 30th, 2009

To many online business owners, the way Google conducts its indexing of the web through spiders and robots is quite a mysterious subject.

While it’s certainly true that there’s a lot of science and math behind Google algorithms all you actually need is to understand are the core basics in order to make well judged business decisions regarding Google and your website.

Firstly, Google does 2 main types of crawls. We have a ‘deep crawl’ which is done once a month on average. This is where Google goes through websites in their entirety indexing pages. Now this takes a long time even for Google to get through so they cannot simply rely on this type of crawl. The internet changes so quickly that Google would find itself quickly out of date.

Performing a deep crawl takes up to one week for Google to complete but of course it must index all of that information which takes longer again. By the time the full process is complete it can take 6 weeks or more for a new site to be found and indexed if it’s lucky!

For this reason we also have what’s known ‘fresh crawls’ which rather than going deeply into websites it skims the surface quickly picking up new recently added information and updates.

Robots which seek out links and travel quickly from site to site are the mechanics behind fresh crawls. It allows Google to skim the web picking up only the latest updates and keep itself relatively up to date with all the constant changes.

For this reason it’s widely known that you are much more likely to get indexed by Google by having some new backlinks to your site than by simply submitting your URL and relying on Google’s deep crawl to find you.

It could take months as opposed to days with a few simple backlinks. Google keeps its fresh crawl schedules secret however by being alert it’s still possible for you to recognize them.

The Wrong Things To Do With SEO

October 29th, 2009

Today I would like to discuss 3 common pitfalls that people get into when doing Search Engine Optimization. Just outright they are expecting results too fast, not taking action, and focusing on the wrong things. I am going to address these things one by one so that you have a good idea how to avoid the pitfalls of SEO and get your site to the top.

So many people have come to me about 3 days after implementing an SEO strategy and asked me why they aren’t seeing results. There are many reasons for this, but overall you are not going to see results in a specific period of time, but if you don’t keep working you will never see results. SEO takes at least a month to see good consistent results where you can start tracking your site.

If you don’t take action you will never see results. SEO has a domino type thing to it. The action you take today will show results in a few weeks or months, if during that time you continue to take action then you will constantly see improvement. If you stop taking action you might move to page one, but then you will see your site fall backwards because you stopped. Once that happens you have to work it back up.

A lot of people make the mistake of focusing on the wrong things. You need to focus off the page first, build lots of quality links, get in the top 10 and then worry about what is on your page. The fact is the stuff on your page makes little difference in the grand scheme of things. There is no perfectly optimized page if there was everyone would know the secret.

In conclusion don’t expect fast results, but while you are waiting continue to take action, there is nothing more frustrating that seeing your site hit a point on the search engines and then watching it drop back down because you didn’t think it was going to happen. Build links every single day for your site, and you will one day be at the top of the search engines.

Need a strategy to really get you backlinks? We have the exact program you are looking for, learn to build thousands of one way links to your site starting today.

Improve Web Site Rankings With On Page Optimization Techniques

October 27th, 2009

On-page optimization is where you should begin and SEO campaign. What you do on your web site and various web pages has a significant impact on search engine results. Even though off-page optimization is a critical component for higher rankings, on-page techniques are essential for building a strong SEO foundation.

Below are a few helpful search engine optimization strategies you can use right now to make your web site more accessible to search engines and as a result, improve your search engine rankings.

Optimize Your Website Name. If you have not yet picked a URL for your website then consider purchasing one that includes your keyword but is broad enough to represent your business. Additionally, try to find a website name that is memorable. This helps with word of mouth and repeat visitors. Include your main broad keyword into your URL.

Optimize Your Page Title. Develop a website title that is relevant to your site and is limited to only 60 characters in length. The reason you want to limit the size of your title is because larger titles cannot be fully displayed on search engine results. You do not want your titles to be cut off when browsers are searching.

The first title or headline that appears on your web page should include your keywords. It is best to have this title display with an H1 tag which signals each search engine as to the importance of the content being displayed. The sub text should be presented with an H2 or H3 tag. This shows the search engines how important your keywords are and helps them promote the key elements of your web page.

Optimize All Your Meta Tags. SEO experts continue to debate the value of meta tags. I can tell you that although meta tags including the title, description, and keywords is less important that it was many years ago, it still plays an important role in optimization.

Search engines use meta tags as a reference for search engine crawlers that view your website content. Your meta tags need to be correlated to your content and also include your keyword phrases. Doing so creates consistency, something that search engine spiders weigh heavily when determining website rankings. Make sure you fully develop your description and keywords.

Optimize your keyword density for Google. Creating a keyword rich content page is essential but do not get carried away. Your keyword density should be around 3 or 4 percent, no more. Some people believe that you could go as high as six percent for Yahoo! optimization but Google seems to like pages that have a smaller keyword density. From my perspective you are better off focusing on the placement of your keywords and the type of emphasis you provide. Remember to focus on H1 and H2 tags and place keywords at the beginning, middle, and end of your web page. In addition you should have an instance of each keyword phrase in bold, italics, and underlined. This variety again reinforces the value of your links.

Vary Your Keywords. The last piece for us to focus on in the area of on-page optimization is keyword density. Instead of cramming your web page with the same keyword phrase again and again, you must use variety. A great way to do this is by adding a word or two before your keyword phrase and after it. This strategy is important because it shows search engines that your website is focused and not trying to manipulate the rankings.

The most important part of any SEO effort is to make your website appear natural and have a good flow. You want to make sure that your site presents valuable content and follows on-page optimization best practices. Use these suggestions as a guide, you will be on your way to a fully optimized website.

Bing Search Engine Optimization Made Easy

October 25th, 2009

There has been quite a bit of media attention about Microsoft’s latest addition to the search engine wars. Bing promises to deliver a more customized search experience to browsers and is essentially their answer to Google. In the last few weeks Bing has received a good deal of interest and is important to anyone doing business online who wants to rank well in the Bing search engine.

Each day I am getting a large number of blog readers asking about Bing and what they should be doing to get sites ranked well on this new search engine. This is a common question whenever new search engines are released regarding the methodology they use to rank.. The good news here is that Bing appears to follow many of the same protocols as Google, the world’s leading search engine.

A common method of evaluating how search engine algorithms work is to do an in depth analysis of top performing sites for given keywords. This allows you to evaluate commonalities and also differences that may account for differences in ranking. Based on my own side by side comparisons and additional in depth research among others in the search engine optimization community, it’s pretty evident that web site age, in bound links, and other criteria are important to the Bing search algorithm.

It appears as though Bing is using many of the same ranking factors as other popular search engines. This is good news simply because optimization of web sites take time and trying to optimize for one search engine over another may provide very mixed results. Bing likes in bound links and that is pretty consistent regardless of which search engine you are trying to improve your organic results for.

Organic search should be at the top of your to do list. If it is then you know where you need to focus, inbound linking. If you haven’t already focused your efforts on organic search then start with on page optimization. Once your site is formatted appropriately, start with off page optimization and link building.

Another area of importance is content. Search engines like Bing look for fresh, relevant content. You want to make sure that your content is valuable to browsers and web site visitors but that it is also relevant and up to date. Consider adding a revising content on a regular basis. This helps you succeed in generating inbound links and quality scores from search engine algorithms.

You might be wondering which search engine you should be optimizing your web site for. Based on what I’ve seen, I’m encouraged by preliminary Bing related findings. I believe that Bing is using many of the same factors that Google uses to evaluate a sites relevance to a search query. As always, focus on white hat methods to optimize your site and follow search engine optimization basics.

Nowadays there are even alternative search engines that primarily focus on ways to find people information. Instead of learning how to google for people information, you can easily go directly to a website and search someone’s address, background, and relatives information all with a cell phone number.

Once upon a time you could choose not to disclose your phone number. That option almost no longer exist. There is also an option for the person receiving the phone call not accept any calls from blocked numbers.

Most alternative people search engines have an annual fee which is usually under fifty dollars. The fee charged will allow you to do unlimited searches for one calendar year. In the past fifty dollar would of only covered the hourly fee that your private investigator charges.

Your purpose for using an alternative search engine may differ from the next person, but one thing that we all can agree on is that the availability of such information is valued. The handiness of doing a people lookup from the comforts of your own house is priceless.

On Page Optimization Made Simple

October 24th, 2009

Search engine optimization is made up of two different disciplines that must work with one another to be truly successful. The two areas you need to master including on page optimization and off page optimization. Web sites that are successful at both can achieve search engine optimization success.

Any powerful SEO strategy is a combination of having the write strategy and applying necessary elements of that strategy in the right order. The same can be said for SEO. To win at the SEO game, you need to be willing to focus on on-page optimization before off-page optimization. This means that you are concentrating your efforts on navigation, web site design, and Meta tags. Beginning with on-page optimization ensures your success over the long term.

Let’s start with looking at your URLs. Many people believe that the only way to get number one rankings is by having your main keyword in your domain name. For example if your keyword is sneakers, you should have a URL that includes your keyword of sneakers. Sure, this would help but its only one of a number of factors considered in search engine optimization. Not to mention the difficulty of finding a good URL that includes your keywords.

It is true that including your keyword phrase in your URL is beneficial even though it is not the end all be all. This is especially true with search engines like Yahoo and Bing. A good strategy to deploy is to use a sub-domain strategy. This means setting up sub domains from your main site that include the keyword you’re optimization for. It would look something like this: sneakers.yoursite.com where your site is the name of your main web site.

If you’re aren’t quite sold on a sub-domain strategy, there is an alternative. The good news is that the second domain option is just as effective and just as easy to implement. Essentially you want to follow the same strategy of determining which keywords you want to promote. Once you’ve done so all you need to do is set up a separate page on your site. It would look something like www.yoursite.com/keyword where keyword is the keyword phrase you are promoting and yoursite is your domain name. This promotes your specific keyword and keeps it close to your home page.

After optimizing your URL, its time to focus on other on page attributes. One of the most important is page load time. This is a function of the overall size of your page, scripts, use of CSS, etc. and requires a good deal of experience from a programming perspective. Your best bet is to have someone with SEO experience review your pages to make sure that you are applying SEO best practices from an on page perspective.

If you’ve done a good job at on-page optimization, then you’re ready to start focusing your effort on off-page optimization. Off page optimization comes down to generating links to your web site from a number of sources. These sources could be authority web sites, blogs, directories, or social media web sites like Facebook and Twitter. The thing to keep in mind is that off-page optimization is an ongoing process that requires ongoing effort.

Begin your SEO efforts by focusing on on-page optimization. This creates a very strong foundation that you can build on for years to come. After that foundation is set, focus on off-page optimization techniques. These tactics can vary over time but should always include some type of link building effort. As you create more inbound links, your search engine results will continually improve.

Improve The Ranking Of Your Website With These Helpful Tips

October 24th, 2009

Putting up a web site is easier than ever. But having a good understanding of design doesn’t help unless you also understand the power of designing your site in a way that improves your chances of top rankings. After I built my first website, I quickly learned that I knew nothing about SEO. As a result, I had to redesign my site after seeking out information about design and top rankings.

I soon realized that search engine optimization needs to be considered before you set out to design your website. At the time, I didn’t understand this basic concept and as a result had to redesign my website at considerable expense. If I had taken the time to learn more about search engine optimization before beginning I could have saved time and money.

Once I redesigned my website and applied the on page optimization techniques from reading dozens of web pages, blogs, and websites, I had a pretty good understanding of what I did wrong and how I could impact my search rankings. With the design tweaks I had made and a little extra effort, I was able to boost my position by about 40 spots. I was so impressed that I got hooked on learning more.

The happy ending to my story is that I eventually got to where I needed to be on most of the major search engines. However, it took much longer than I had expected or ever truly wanted it to. The good news is that I learned a great deal about search engine optimization throughout the process and want to share some of the most powerful techniques Ive learned which should save you tons of time and expense.

Put your time and effort into choosing the right keywords and optimize your site around those specific keywords. The Internet is crowded. When first starting out, dont try to outrank Nike for the keyword sneakers ” its not going to happen.

One of the best pieces of advice I was given by a developer I worked with, when it comes to SEO, is to keep you website basic. That means no fancy stuff. I know everyone wants to create unbelievable functionality but the reality is that keeping it simple is better for your website visitors and search spiders that crawl your site.

Focus on link building. Submit articles, focus on acquiring one-way links, and develop a strategy for updating content on a regular basis so others will link to your site. Especially for Google, link building is an incredibly powerful tool.

If you are searching for SEO related information and advice, be careful of self professed experts. You want to make sure that the advice you’re receiving has been proven to work. Unfortunately, there aren’t many “secrets” about SEO out there. What differentiates one technique from another is simply the strategy and process involved. You should always be learning more an experimenting with various SEO techniques.

The good news is that although these techniques take time, they work. No more searching for the silver bullet ” keep things simple. Additionally, be sure to research software or services that can help you along the way. Don’t be afraid to get help and persist until you achieve your goal. It worked for me and it can work for you too.

The Best SEO Strategies For Your Web Site

October 24th, 2009

As someone who makes a living improving search engine rankings, I can tell you that there is a lot of bad information out there about SEO. What if I were to tell you that the road map for achieving top rankings was within your grasp? The holy grail of rankings is not imaginary. As is true with any major success, it leaves clues.

By working with literally hundreds of small and medium sized websites, I have found that top ranked sites have a number of factors in common. What are they? I’m about to share these factors with you and explain what separates those in the top Google positions and those that are never found on page one of search results.

The first SEO ranking factor that has proven effective time and again is making sure that all inbound links to your web site have keywords in their anchor text. By placing keyword in the anchor text of these links, you are directing search engines to your website and individuals search for a particular keyword. I know that you can’t always control what someone names a link to your web site, but where you can, make sure it includes your keywords.

The second most important ranking factor is using keywords in your title tag and other meta tags. Meta tags still have an impact on your search rankings. Although the weight of meta tags may be minimal, they are effective in categorizing your page and identifying what search engines should expect to find when they spider web site pages. Make sure your tags are constructed properly and include you keywords.

The third ranking factor to consider for your web site is link popularity. This phrase has been talked about in search engine circles for a while but can be equated with Page Rank. The concept of Page rank or link popularity for that matter take a number of factors into consideration to identify the quality of web pages from an external perspective. The largest factor that influences search engine rankings is the number and quality of links that are pointing to a web site or web page.

The fourth ranking factor is the diversity of domains that link to your web site. For many search engines, its not only what links you have to your site but making sure they are from different domains. This represents more popularity associated with you web site and therefore is judged to be a better search result. When link building, try to focus on generating inbound links from different websites.

The fifth ranking factor is placing your keywords in your root domain. If you are unable to acquire a domain that has www.yourkeyword.com as the format, don’t despair. You can vary your domain by including words before or after your keyword. Short of being able to acquire such a domain, place your keywords using a subdomain structure or placing a folder on your root domain. This can have a positive impact on your overall rankings.

All of the top five ranking factors will work for you. I have personally seen them dramatically improve rankings for even the smallest web sites. Make sure that you address each factor. In combination, these factors have the most impact. By addressing the top ranking factors for your web site, you’ll be able to add additional search engine optimization techniques to ensure top placement over the long term..
